Tunisia itinerary: how to spend 3, 5 or 7 days
For a first Tunisia itinerary, spend 3 days on Tunis, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and one Roman site; 5 days to add Kairouan, El Jem and the Sahel coast; and 7 days to reach the Sahara at Douz and the oases near Tozeur. Base yourself in one coastal town for the shorter trips and travel south only if you have a week.

How many days does a Tunisia itinerary need?
Five days is the sweet spot for a first Tunisia itinerary: enough for the capital, the two great inland sites and a day by the sea. Three days covers the north well. Seven days is the minimum if you want the Sahara, because the dunes start about five hours south of the main resorts.
| Trip length | What you see | Best base | Pace |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days | Tunis medina, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, Dougga or the Cap Bon | Tunis or Hammamet | Relaxed |
| 5 days | The 3-day plan plus Kairouan, El Jem and Sousse | Hammamet or Sousse | Steady |
| 7 days | The north, the centre, then Matmata, Douz and Tozeur | Hammamet, then two nights in the south | Full |
Tunisia is small on the map but slower on the ground than people expect. The motorway runs well from Tunis to Sfax; away from it, roads are good but narrow and pass through towns. Plan on 70 to 80 km per hour on average.
What is the best 3-day Tunisia itinerary?
Spend day one in the capital, day two on Roman ruins and day three on the coast. Stay in one hotel the whole time so you never pack a bag.
Day 1: Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said
The medina of Tunis in the morning, Carthage at midday and Sidi Bou Said for the afternoon light. Our Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said day trip guide has the hour-by-hour plan.
Day 2: Dougga or the Bardo Museum
Dougga, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the most complete Roman town in North Africa, set on a hillside two hours west of Tunis. If you prefer a shorter day, the Bardo Museum in Tunis holds the largest collection of Roman mosaics in the world. It is closed on Mondays.
Day 3: the Cap Bon or a slow day in Hammamet
The Cap Bon peninsula has the Punic town of Kerkouane, sea caves at El Haouaria and hot springs at Korbous. Or stay in Hammamet: the walled medina and the beach are a ten minute walk apart.
What is the best 5-day Tunisia itinerary?
Take the 3-day plan and add two days in the centre of the country. Hammamet works as a base for all five days; Sousse is a good alternative if you want a livelier town at night.
- Day 1. Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said.
- Day 2. Dougga and Bulla Regia, or the Bardo Museum and a free afternoon.
- Day 3. Kairouan and El Jem, two UNESCO sites and the strongest single day in the country. See our Kairouan and El Jem day trip guide.
- Day 4. The Sahel coast: Port El Kantaoui, the medina of Sousse and the ribat of Monastir. Our Sahel day trip has the shortest drives of any full day.
- Day 5. The Zaghouan hills and the abandoned Berber village of Zriba, or the beach.
What is the best 7-day Tunisia itinerary with the Sahara?
Spend four days in the north and centre, then three days on a loop through the south with two nights there. The Sahara is not a day trip from the coast: Douz is about five hours from Hammamet each way. If you have an extra day, end on the island of Djerba, listed by UNESCO in 2023, and fly home from there.
- Day 1. Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said.
- Day 2. Kairouan and El Jem.
- Day 3. The Sahel coast or Dougga.
- Day 4. A slow day in Hammamet or Sousse before the long drive.
- Day 5. Drive south via Sfax to Matmata, about 4 h 30 from Sousse, and see the underground troglodyte houses. Continue to Douz for the night.
- Day 6. Sunrise in the dunes at Douz, then across the Chott el Djerid salt lake to Tozeur, about 1 h 30. Afternoon in the mountain oases of Chebika and Tamerza. Night in Tozeur.
- Day 7. The long road back north, about 4 h 30 to 5 h to Tunis or Hammamet.
Our guide to southern Tunisia and the Sahara explains what each stop is like, how to choose between a day trip and a longer tour, and which months to avoid.
Where should you stay in Tunisia?
Stay in Hammamet for the best balance: one hour from Tunis, 90 minutes from Kairouan and close to the Cap Bon. Choose Tunis if you care most about the city and museums, and Sousse if you want the centre and the south within easier reach.
| Base | Good for | Drive to Tunis | Drive to Kairouan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tunis | Medina, Bardo, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said | In the city | About 2 h 30 |
| Hammamet | Beaches and every day trip in the north and centre | About 1 h | About 1 h 30 |
| Sousse or Port El Kantaoui | Kairouan, El Jem, Monastir and the road south | About 2 h | About 1 h |
How do you get around Tunisia?
For day trips from a resort, a private driver is the simplest option. For the long loop south, a rental car or a multi-day tour works best. Public transport links the big towns but rarely reaches the sites themselves.
- Private driver. Pickup at your hotel, a fixed price per vehicle, no parking or navigation. All our day trips work this way, from 45 € per vehicle.
- Louage. Shared minibuses that leave when full, cheap and fast between towns, but with luggage limits and no stops on the way.
- Train. Comfortable on the coastal line from Tunis to Sousse and Sfax. The TGM light rail links Tunis with Carthage and Sidi Bou Said.
- Rental car. Freedom in the south, but city driving in Tunis is stressful and medina parking is hard.
When is the best time to visit Tunisia?
April to June and September to October are the best months for a mixed itinerary. The coast is warm, the ruins are pleasant to walk, and the desert is bearable during the day.
| Season | North and coast | Sahara | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring, March to May | 18 to 26 °C | Warm days, cool nights | Best for everything |
| Summer, June to August | 28 to 35 °C | Often above 40 °C | Beach and short days only |
| Autumn, September to November | 20 to 30 °C | Warm days | Excellent |
| Winter, December to February | 10 to 18 °C | Mild days, cold nights | Quiet sites, good for the desert |
How much does a Tunisia itinerary cost?
Less than most Mediterranean trips. Food, transport and entry tickets are cheap; the biggest costs are your hotel and any private transport. As a rough guide for the extras on top of your hotel:
| Item | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Entry to a major site such as Carthage or El Jem | 20 dinars per adult since April 2026, 30 from January 2027 |
| Bardo National Museum | 30 dinars per adult since April 2026 |
| Lunch in a local restaurant | About 25 to 50 dinars per person |
| Private day trip with driver | From 45 € to 200 € per vehicle with us, depending on route and group |
| Louage between two towns | A few dinars to about 30 dinars, depending on distance |
Entry fees for foreign visitors rose on 1 April 2026 and rise again in January 2027, so budget a little more if you travel next year. A private car is better value the more of you there are, because the price is per vehicle, not per person.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- Trying the Sahara as a day trip. Ten hours of driving for two hours in the dunes is not worth it.
- Changing hotel every night. For 3 or 5 days, one base saves half a day of packing and check-ins.
- Forgetting Mondays. The Bardo Museum and several house museums close.
- Ignoring Friday prayers. Mosques close to visitors around midday on Fridays.
- Underestimating cash. Entry tickets, louages and most cafés take dinars only.
Tunisia itinerary: your questions
Is 3 days enough for Tunisia?
Three days is enough for Tunis, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and one more site such as Dougga or the Cap Bon. It is not enough for Kairouan, El Jem and the Sahara as well. If you can stretch to five days, you see the centre of the country too.
Can you visit the Sahara from Hammamet or Sousse in one day?
Technically yes, but we do not recommend it. Douz is about five hours from Hammamet each way, so a one-day trip means ten hours in a vehicle for a short time in the dunes. Two nights in the south make the trip far more rewarding.
What is the best base for a week in Tunisia?
Hammamet works best for most visitors: one hour from Tunis, 90 minutes from Kairouan, close to the Cap Bon and with long sandy beaches. Add two nights in the south, one in Douz and one in Tozeur, if your week includes the Sahara, and keep your Hammamet room for the rest.
Is Tunisia easy to travel around?
Yes, between the main towns. Trains and louages are cheap and frequent on the coast. The sites themselves are harder to reach without a car, which is why many visitors use a private driver for day trips and a rental car or tour for the south.
What is the best month to visit Tunisia?
May and October are ideal for a mixed trip. Both bring a warm sea, comfortable days at the ruins and a desert that is pleasant during the day with cool nights. July and August are hot and busy, especially in the south, where afternoons often pass 40 °C.
