Kairouan and El Jem day trip: Islamic heritage and Roman history in one day
A Kairouan and El Jem day trip pairs two UNESCO sites in central Tunisia: the Great Mosque and old medina of Kairouan in the morning, and the Roman amphitheatre of El Jem in the afternoon. They are about 50 minutes apart by road. From Hammamet or Sousse you leave at 08:00 and are back at your hotel around 17:00.

Why is a Kairouan and El Jem day trip worth it?
Because a Kairouan and El Jem day trip shows the two great layers of Tunisian history in a single loop. Kairouan was founded in 670 and became the first great Islamic city of North Africa. Four centuries earlier, El Jem was a wealthy Roman town rich enough to build one of the largest amphitheatres in the empire.
Both are on the UNESCO World Heritage list: Kairouan since 1988 and the amphitheatre of El Jem since 1979. Both are also inland, away from the beach hotels, so most visitors only see them on an organised day out.
The pairing also works on the road. Kairouan sits about 90 minutes from Hammamet, El Jem sits about 50 minutes south east of Kairouan, and the motorway brings you back to the coast from there. No stretch of the day is wasted doubling back.
What is the best route and timing?
Do Kairouan first and El Jem second. The Great Mosque usually closes to visitors in the early afternoon, while the amphitheatre stays open until late afternoon all year. Here is our timetable from a Hammamet hotel:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 08:00 | Your driver meets you at hotel reception |
| 08:15 | Drive inland to Kairouan, about 1 h 30 |
| 09:30 | Kairouan: Great Mosque, Aghlabid basins, medina and souks |
| 12:00 | Lunch in Kairouan, paid on the spot |
| 13:00 | Drive to El Jem through the olive groves, about 45 minutes |
| 13:45 | El Jem: the amphitheatre, then the museum if you like |
| 15:30 | Drive back to the coast |
| 17:00 | Drop-off at your hotel door |
From a Tunis hotel the day is longer, with about 2 h 30 on the road to Kairouan. It still fits inside our rule of being back at your hotel by 18:00, but it leaves less slack.
What should you see in Kairouan?
Focus on the Great Mosque, the Aghlabid basins and a walk through the medina. Two and a half hours covers all three without rushing.
Can you visit the Great Mosque of Kairouan?
Yes. Non-Muslim visitors can enter the vast marble courtyard and look into the prayer hall through its carved wooden doors, usually from about 08:00 to 14:00. The prayer hall itself is reserved for worshippers.
The mosque was founded by Uqba ibn Nafi in 670, and most of what you see dates from the 9th century. Look up at the square three-storey minaret, one of the oldest in the Islamic world, and down at the sundial in the courtyard. Shoulders and knees must be covered; scarves are sometimes lent at the gate.
What else is in Kairouan?
- Aghlabid basins. Two round reservoirs from the 9th century that once supplied the city with water. The larger one is about 128 m across.
- Zaouia of Sidi Sahab. Often called the Barber's Mosque, with some of the finest tilework in the country.
- The medina. Whitewashed lanes, blue doors and the carpet trade that made the city famous. Looking costs nothing.
- Makroudh. The local pastry of semolina and dates, fried and dipped in honey. Buy it warm from a medina bakery.
What makes the El Jem amphitheatre special?
Its size and its state. Built around 238 AD, the amphitheatre measures about 148 by 122 m and could seat roughly 30,000 people, which places it among the largest Roman arenas ever built. It still stands to almost its full height, and you can walk the tiers and the passages under the arena floor.
Allow about an hour in the amphitheatre and 30 to 45 minutes for the archaeological museum, a short walk away. The museum holds some of the finest Roman mosaics in Tunisia and a reconstructed Roman villa, the House of Africa. One ticket covers both.
How much are the tickets?
Count on 20 dinars per person in Kairouan and 20 dinars in El Jem, so about 40 dinars per adult for the day. These prices for foreign visitors apply since 1 April 2026 and rise to 30 dinars per site in January 2027, according to the new grid reported by Business News.
| Site | Since April 2026 | From January 2027 | Opening hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kairouan monuments | 20 | 30 | Great Mosque usually 08:00 to 14:00 |
| El Jem amphitheatre and museum | 20 | 30 | 07:30 to 17:00 in winter, 07:00 to 18:30 in summer |
Pay in cash, in dinars, at each entrance. Students with an international student card pay 2 dinars. Opening hours change during Ramadan, so check with your driver the day before if your trip falls in that month.
Is a private trip better than a group tour?
For two people or more, usually yes. Coach tours sell this day per seat, but they collect several hotels, keep one timetable and often add a carpet shop stop that eats into your time in Kairouan. A private car costs the same for one person or four.
| From | 1 to 4 people | 4 to 6 people | 5 to 8 people | 8 to 12 people |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hammamet | 90 € | 120 € | 130 € | 160 € |
| Sousse or Port El Kantaoui | 100 € | 130 € | 140 € | 170 € |
| Tunis | 130 € | 160 € | 170 € | 200 € |
For a family of four from Hammamet that is 22.50 € each for the car and driver, before entry tickets. You pay the driver on the day, in cash, and nothing is taken online. You can compare it with our other routes in the full list of Tunisia excursion prices.
What should you know before you go?
- Dress code. Covered shoulders and knees for the Great Mosque. A light scarf solves it.
- Heat. El Jem has almost no shade. From June to September, bring a hat and at least 1.5 litres of water per person.
- Friday. The Great Mosque closes to visitors before the midday prayer, so Friday is the weakest day for this trip.
- Children. Most children enjoy El Jem far more than Kairouan. Promise them the arena and keep the medina short.
- Cash. Bring dinars for tickets, lunch and pastries. Cards are rarely accepted in the medina.

Can you visit Kairouan and El Jem in one day?
Yes. The two towns are about 50 minutes apart, so a full day gives two and a half hours in Kairouan and almost two hours in El Jem. From Hammamet or Sousse you leave at 08:00 and are back at your hotel around 17:00.
Which should you visit first, Kairouan or El Jem?
Kairouan. The Great Mosque usually closes to non-Muslim visitors around 14:00, while the El Jem amphitheatre stays open until 17:00 in winter and later in summer. Doing El Jem in the afternoon also means you finish close to the motorway back to the coast.
How much does a Kairouan and El Jem day trip cost?
With us, a private day costs 90 € per vehicle from Hammamet and 100 € from Sousse for up to four people, with driver and fuel included. Entry tickets are extra: 20 dinars per site for foreign visitors since April 2026, rising to 30 dinars in 2027.
Is El Jem better than the Colosseum?
It is smaller than the Colosseum in Rome but far less crowded, and you can walk more of it, including the upper tiers and the passages under the arena. Many visitors find the experience more personal. It is also one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres anywhere.
What should women wear in Kairouan?
Clothes that cover the shoulders and knees, which is the rule for everyone entering the Great Mosque. A headscarf is not required for non-Muslim visitors in the courtyard, but a light scarf is useful to have. Kairouan is conservative compared with the coast, so modest dress is appreciated.
