Southern Tunisia: your Tunisia Sahara tour and the Berber villages, explained

A Tunisia Sahara tour usually loops through Matmata's underground houses, the dunes around Douz and Ksar Ghilane, the fortified granaries of Tataouine and the oasis town of Tozeur. Allow at least two nights in the south: Douz is about five hours from Hammamet, so a single day trip leaves almost no time in the desert itself.

What is a Tunisia Sahara tour like?

A Tunisia Sahara tour crosses a land of dunes, salt flats, palm oases and stone villages built into the hills. Within a few hours you cross the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, a sea of sand that runs into Algeria, the white crust of the Chott el Djerid salt lake and the Dahar hills where Amazigh (Berber) communities built their villages.

The south feels far from the beach resorts in every sense: towns are smaller, the light is harder and the evenings are cold even after a hot day. It rewards travellers who give it time. If you are fitting it into a longer holiday, our Tunisia itinerary for 3, 5 or 7 days shows how the south joins the rest of the country.

Which places should you see in the south?

Pick four or five of the stops below, depending on whether you lean towards the dunes, the villages or the oases. Trying to see them all in two days means most of your time is spent on the road.

Matmata: underground troglodyte homes

The Amazigh families of Matmata dug their homes into the ground: a round pit open to the sky, with rooms carved into its walls to stay cool in summer and warm in winter. Some are still lived in, and several can be visited. The Hotel Sidi Driss, built in such pits, appeared as Luke Skywalker's home in the first Star Wars film.

Douz: the gateway to the Sahara

Douz is where most visitors first touch the dunes. Camel rides and quad bikes leave from the edge of town, and sunrise or sunset in the sand is the moment people remember. In late December the town hosts the Festival International du Sahara, with camel races and traditional music; the 2025 edition ran from 25 to 28 December.

Ksar Ghilane: an oasis in the dunes

Ksar Ghilane is the closest you get to the deep desert without a long expedition: a small oasis with a warm spring-fed pool, surrounded by dunes. Desert camps here let you spend the night in the Sahara with a proper bed. A Roman frontier fort stands in the sand a short ride away.

Tataouine, Chenini and the ksour

Around Tataouine, Berber communities built ksour: fortified granaries made of stacked vaulted rooms called ghorfas, sometimes four storeys high. Ksar Ouled Soltane is the best preserved. Nearby, Chenini is a hilltop village of stone houses that blends into the rock, with a white mosque on the ridge.

Tozeur, the Chott el Djerid and the mountain oases

Tozeur is an oasis town famous for its patterned brick architecture and its vast palm grove. From Douz, the road crosses the Chott el Djerid on a straight causeway about 80 km long, where mirages are common in the dry months. North west of Tozeur, the mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza and Mides hide waterfalls and canyons close to the Algerian border.

Djerba: the island at the end of the road

Djerba, listed by UNESCO in 2023, is a good place to end a southern loop. Its whitewashed villages, the pottery town of Guellala and the El Ghriba synagogue sit about 90 minutes from Tataouine.

Is a Tunisia Sahara tour better as a day trip or over several days?

Over several days. Choose a multi-day tour unless you are staying on Djerba or in the south already. From Hammamet, Sousse or Tunis, the desert is simply too far for one day. Two nights is the minimum that feels worthwhile, and three nights lets you add the ksour or the mountain oases.

What does a 2 or 3 day route through the south look like?

Most routes start from the coast at Sousse, Sfax or Djerba and loop through Matmata and Douz. The three day version adds either Tozeur and the mountain oases or Tataouine and the ksour. These are realistic plans with real drive times:

Day2 days, 1 night3 days, 2 nights
Day 1Coast to Matmata, about 4 h from Sousse. Troglodyte houses, then Douz for sunset in the dunesCoast to Matmata, then Douz for sunset and the night
Day 2Sunrise in the dunes, then the long drive back northAcross the Chott el Djerid to Tozeur, about 1 h 30. Chebika and Tamerza in the afternoon
Day 3Tozeur back to the coast or Tunis, about 4 h 30 to 5 h

Starting from Djerba changes the picture: the ksour of Tataouine and Chenini are about 90 minutes away, and Matmata about two hours, so even a two day loop feels relaxed.

What is a night in a desert camp like?

Comfortable and quieter than you expect. Camps near Douz and Ksar Ghilane range from simple Bedouin-style tents with shared washrooms to tented rooms with private bathrooms. Dinner is usually served around a fire, and the sky is the real show.

  • Temperatures drop fast. Even after a 30 °C day, nights can fall below 10 °C. Bring a warm layer.
  • Sunrise is worth the alarm. The dunes change colour in the first half hour of light.
  • Pack light. Many camps are reached by 4x4 or on foot over the sand, so a small overnight bag is easier than a suitcase.

Can you see Berber villages without going south?

Yes. One hour from Hammamet, the Zaghouan hills hold Zriba Loulia (also written Zriba Olia), a Berber village abandoned in the 20th century whose stone houses still cling to the slope. It makes a calm, short day with the Roman Temple of Waters in Zaghouan.

It is a good choice if your holiday does not allow two nights in the south, or as a taste of Amazigh heritage before a longer trip later. Our Zaghouan and Berber village day trip costs from 70 € per vehicle from Hammamet.

When is the best time to visit the Sahara in Tunisia?

October to April. Days are warm and the light is beautiful, while nights in the desert can drop close to freezing in December and January. From June to August, daytime temperatures in the south regularly pass 40 °C, which makes walking in the dunes hard.

December to FebruaryMildCold, sometimes near 0 °CFestival in Douz, clear skies

May to SeptemberHot to very hotWarmShort early visits only

What should you pack and know before you go?

  • Layers. A warm jacket for desert nights, even after a hot day.
  • Sun and sand. Sunglasses, a hat, a scarf to cover your face in the wind and a bag for your camera.
  • Cash. Small villages and camps rarely take cards. Bring dinars.
  • Vehicle. Main roads are paved. Some tracks, including parts of the route to Ksar Ghilane and the mountain oases, are easier in a 4x4 after rain.
  • Border areas. Some zones near the Algerian and Libyan borders are restricted. Check your government's travel advice before you go, for example the UK Foreign Office advice for Tunisia.

Tunisia Sahara tour: your questions

Can you visit the Sahara on a day trip from Hammamet?

Not comfortably. Douz, the closest gateway to the dunes, is about five hours from Hammamet each way, so a day trip means around ten hours on the road for one or two hours in the sand. Two nights in the south give a far better experience.

How many days do you need for southern Tunisia?

Two nights is the minimum for Matmata and the dunes at Douz. Three nights let you add Tozeur and the Chott el Djerid, or Tataouine and the ksour. With four or five nights you can do a full loop and finish on the island of Djerba.

Where was Star Wars filmed in Tunisia?

Several places in the south. The Hotel Sidi Driss in Matmata was Luke Skywalker's home, the ksour around Tataouine inspired the look of Mos Espa, and sets for the prequels were built near Tozeur. Some of those desert sets can still be visited.

Is it safe to travel in southern Tunisia?

The main tourist route through Matmata, Douz, Tozeur and Tataouine sees visitors all year. Some zones near the Algerian and Libyan borders are restricted, so check your government's current travel advice and travel with a local driver or guide if you plan to leave the main roads.

What is the best month to see the Tunisian Sahara?

October, November, March and April offer warm days and comfortable nights, the best balance for walking in the dunes. December and January are good too, with clear skies, cold nights and the Douz Festival in late December. Avoid June to August, when afternoon temperatures in the south often pass 40 °C.
