What the Sousse and Monastir excursion covers
This Sousse and Monastir excursion follows fifty kilometres of the Sahel coast and asks very little of you in the car. Port El Kantaoui opens the day with a whitewashed marina built in the Andalusian style. Sousse follows, with a UNESCO-listed medina, a 9th-century ribat you can climb for the view over the rooftops and one of the finest mosaic museums in the country. Monastir closes it with the ribat that guards the harbour, the largest in the Maghreb, and the Bourguiba mausoleum with its gold dome. Pickup at your hotel at 08:00, back well before 18:00.

How the Sousse and Monastir day runs
The Sousse and Monastir excursion runs from west to east, in geographical order, which avoids a single wasted kilometre. We start at Port El Kantaoui for a gentle opening, then Sousse in mid morning before the medina fills up, and Monastir in the afternoon. Since no transfer takes more than twenty minutes, any time you spend in one place is easily made up in another.

Port El Kantaoui
Marina & upmarket resortVisit: 1 h 30
Port El Kantaoui is a resort built from scratch in the 1970s on a plan inspired by Andalusian medinas. Its marina holds several hundred pleasure boats and its pedestrian lanes lined with bougainvillea create a distinctive Mediterranean atmosphere. It is a gentle, pleasant way to begin the day before diving into the historic sites of Sousse and Monastir.
- Marina filled with pleasure boats
- Neo-Andalusian architecture from the 1970s
- Seafront promenade and beaches
On the road to Sousse
Sousse
UNESCO medina, ribat, kasbahVisit: 2 h
The medina of Sousse is one of the best preserved in North Africa. The ribat, a military watchtower built in 821, has looked out over the sea from the heights of the medina ever since. The Kasbah museum holds remarkable Roman mosaics, including the famous head of Medusa. The Great Mosque, with its bays and inner courtyard, is a model of Aghlabid restraint.
- Ribat, an 8th-century fortress facing the sea
- Great Mosque of Sousse, Aghlabid architecture
- Kasbah museum, Roman mosaics of Sousse

Monastir is a town heavy with history and symbols. Its ribat, built in 796, is among the best preserved in the Islamic world and has served as a set for major historical films. The mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, the first president of independent Tunisia, is a white marble monument dominating the town. The medieval town by the sea offers exceptional views over the Mediterranean.
- Ribat of Monastir, a set for Monty Python and Zeffirelli films

Port El Kantaoui, the gentle opening
A marina built in the style of an Andalusian village, with its boats, cafés and shops. An hour is enough for a coffee by the water and a walk around the basin. It is the most relaxed stop of the day and the easiest with children.
- Pedestrian marina, no traffic
- Cafés and terraces facing the boats
- An hour is enough, longer if you want to linger
- Boat trips available on request
Sousse, its medina and its ninth-century ribat
The Sousse medina is UNESCO listed and still a working medina rather than a showcase. The ribat of 821 is climbed by a narrow staircase up to a watchtower overlooking the whole port. The Great Mosque next door looks more like a fortress than a place of worship, which the coastal raids of the period explain.
- UNESCO listed medina, still lived in
- Ribat of 821 and its panoramic watchtower
- Great Mosque built like a fortress
- About two hours, narrow stairs at the ribat
Monastir, the ribat and the mausoleum
The ribat of Monastir, set right at the water's edge, has served as a film location and can be climbed to its terraces. Next to it, the Bourguiba mausoleum and its golden domes tell the story of the country's independence. The whole area is compact and flat, which makes for an easy end to the day.
- Seafront ribat with terraces open to visitors
- Bourguiba mausoleum, golden domes and minarets
- Flat district, very little walking
- An hour and a half on site
Your pace along the Sahel coast
Because the Sousse and Monastir excursion involves so little driving, it is the one where the programme bends most easily. You can spend two hours in the Sousse medina, cut Port El Kantaoui short, eat late on the Monastir waterfront or head back in mid afternoon. The driver follows you and simply tells you where the day stands.
- Fifteen to twenty minute transfers between stops
- Order of the visits can be changed on the spot
- Fish lunch on the harbour, at your own cost
- Return possible from mid afternoon onwards
Three practical details
Two medinas, two religious monuments and a lot of stairs: here is what to plan for.
Narrow stairs at the ribat
The Sousse watchtower is reached by a tight spiral staircase with no continuous handrail. The courtyard remains accessible to everyone.
Quieter souks in the morning
The Sousse medina fills up after 11:00, when the groups arrive. So we pass through late morning rather than at midday.
Modest dress required
The Great Mosque of Sousse and the ribat require covered shoulders and knees. A sarong is enough.
Sousse, Monastir and Port El Kantaoui: your questions
How much walking the medina involves, whether you can climb the ribat, ticket prices and beach time: the answers asked for most.
